“Everything snapped into sharp focus, but Henry, without knowing why, suddenly felt
very much afraid.”
From Faerie Wars
There is a world beyond your imagination: a world filled with honorable heroes and
despicable villains. Fourteen-year-old Henry York dives into this world after
finding out one thing that changes his life forever: his mom is having an affair with
his father’s secretary. As Henry struggles with a new way of life (he's never had two moms before), he also has to deal with his parents divorce. The only way he can get
away from his life is by helping out cranky old Mr. Fogarty clean up his house.
Mr. Fogarty is a very mean man, and not able to trust anyone. But that’s what happens
when you live a life like he did.
Henry’s parents know about Fogarty’s troubled past, and don’t think Henry should go
over to Fogarty’s anymore. But how can he not, when he’s discovered something
magical in his backyard? Pyrgus Malvae is a magical creature from the Purple Kingdom, and all he needs is to get back home, not to mention end the war that destroys his
land.
Pretty soon Henry is breaking into schools, stealing supplies (pens, pencils, tape),
building, inventing, and hiding.
Not only is Henry in action, but also he has to think about what is going on. What about the other side of the story? Where did
Pyrgus Malvae come from, and what’s happening in the Purple Kingdom? Pyrgus' people are really worried about him, because not only
is Pyrgus a magical creature, but he is descended from royalty and is next in line to
the throne. Pyrgus' sister, Blue, is sick with worry, and gathers up the
help of some allies (and a few enemies).
Very quickly, Blue is breaking and entering, solving magic spells, and confronting
long standing enemies to end all the wars in her life, including the personal battles she faces. Will she be able to find her brother and get him home safe before time runs out?
Blood is splattered across the Purple Kingdom, and this beautiful world is falling apart.
Who can survive in a world of magic and demons? Who can survive with knives charged
with 1000 volts?
All this is too much for Henry. Is it a dream, or is it
reality? He doesn’t even have time to find out before he is dragged to the Purple Kingdom with Pyrgus, where he is mystified by the horrors that befall the kingdom.
Sparked with action scenes and a little romance, this book is three-hundred sixty-eight pages of delicious and tantalizing fantasy.
In this “ALA Best Young Adult Book of the Year,” teens will be able to connect with
Henry in his internal and external struggle with both worlds.
Filled with wit, humor, and delectable fantasy and action, this is one book you cannot turn
down.
Three more books continue the astonishing secret world of Faeries, each better than
the next: The Purple Emperor, Rulers of the Realm, and the
final book, Faerie Lord, which I found to be an earth-shattering climax. Each one is better than the next. I hope
you’ll enjoy this wonderful book page by page, just as much as I did.
